One Day, One Game – The Ashes Edition

Following the huge success of the inaugural ‘One Day, One Game’ event in March, the Kent Cricket Board and Kent County Cricket Club held an 'Ashes Edition' on Saturday 12th October 2013, at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury. The purpose of the event was to bring together all aspects of the cricket family in Kent and in doing so provide both clubs and those associated with them the chance to enhance the services that they provide. Highlighting the ‘One Game’ ethos, over 250 members of the cricket community in Kent attended; including players, coaches, volunteers, young leaders, umpires, scorers and groundsmen.
Following an inspirational opening address by Dave Leighton (England and Wales Cricket Board), attendees were able to choose from 17 different workshops throughout the day which included Funding for Community Sport presented by Carolyn Dool, Chris Metherall and James Kailanathan (Kent Sport), Social Media and the ‘Twittersphere’ presented by Abi Hiatt-Gipson (Kent Cricket), Spirit of Cricket Q & A delivered by Geraint Jones (Kent and England cricketer), Water Management delivered by Andy Clarke (IoG), How Good is your Soil delivered by David Ray (Rigby Taylor) and HMRC and Tax for Clubs delivered by Club Leaders (Sport England). In addition to the workshops that were provided, over 15 trade stands from companies including Tiny Ship Media Ltd, Stuart Canvas, Lashings All-Stars Ltd, Rigby Taylor and Dura-Sport Limited formed a ‘Market Place’ during the lunch break which provided clubs with a wealth of information.
The main sponsor of the event, CricHQ ran workshop sessions throughout the day, demonstrating their online scoring system and technology that will help clubs across all levels of the game improve performance and coaching through data analysis.
The event also hosted the annual Kent Coaches Association Coaches Day, and saw Kent and England spinner James Tredwell join former England Women’s coach Mark Lane demonstrating coaching drills that emphasise ‘batting versus spin’. Jason Weaver (KCB High Performance Manager) and Ray Willis (Kent Age Group Coach) focused on fielding and provided coaches with some key messages to take away and introduce into their practices. To round up the coaches workshops Denise Holland (Class Performance) delivered a very insightful workshop that addressed the power of thought and how this can impact on the mindset of coaches.
The day culminated in an excellent Ashes Q & A session. Hosted by Ben Croucher from BBC Radio Kent, with James Tredwell, Geraint Jones, Mark Lane and Chris Tavare answering a wealth of questions from the floor relating to past, present and future Ashes series. The panel debated the topic of Ashes memories, the growing use of technology in cricket as well as the increasing development in coverage of women’s cricket. The panel were also asked for their Ashes predictions, and unsurprisingly there was a unanimous vote of confidence for the England team.
The One Day, One Game, Ashes Edition was another huge success for the Kent Cricket Board and Kent County Cricket Club, with fabulous support from those in attendance, as well as all the various contributors throughout the day. It was a great testament to the passion of all those involved in cricket in Kent.
