Australia claim morale-boosting victory

Monday 2nd March 2009

OPENER Alex Blackwell struck an unbeaten 91 as Australia recorded a morale and confidence-boosting victory over old rivals England by 25 runs in an ICCCricket World Cup 2009 warm-up match at Village Green on Monday.

Blackwell was flawless as she struck five fours in an 112 ball knock that steered the reigning champions to 214-8 off their 50 overs. In reply, England were bowled out for 189 with 4 overs to spare after looking comfortable at 152-4.

England captain Charlotte Edwards (pictured) was as elegant as ever whilst hitting seven fours in her 93 ball innings of 72 with Claire Taylor also showing signs of good form with a 47 ball innings of 35. Kent’s Lydia Greenway contributed 23 and added 65 runs for the fourth wicket with her captain.

Reflecting on the victory, Australian captain Karen Rolton said: ’The result doesn’t matter too much but we’re always happy to win, especially against a team like England who are one of the favourites for the World Cup.’
