Charlotte Edwards leads England to win in opening South Africa ODI

Charlotte Edwards led England Women to victory in the first one-day international of a five-match series against South Africa in Benoni.

The 36-year-old Kent and England skipper scored 33, claimed a run-out and took a catch in a rain-reduced contest after the hosts chose to bat first.

Trisha Chetty’s 90 at the top of the order was the standout performance before rain and lightning reduced the tourists’ target of 150 off 28.3 overs.

Edwards reached 33 either side of a rain delay and two revised Duckworth-Lewis targets due to heavy rain and lightning.

Sussex wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor (41*) and vice-captain Heather Knight (26*) saw England home.

Next up is a trip to SuperSport Park in Gauteng on Friday for the second ODI.
