DBD hits 50 as South win in Barbados

Kent opener Daniel Bell-Drummond hit a fluent 50 as South took a 1-0 lead against the North in Barbados.

England coaches and selectors watched on as the 24-year-old hit eight fours as the South started the three-match one-day series in style.

Bell-Drummond (52) and Middlesex left-hander Nick Gubbins (116) got the 2017 series winners off to the perfect start as they amassed 347 after North captain Steve Mullaney invited the South XI to bat first.

Sussex all-rounder Delroy Rawlins was the only other batsman to pass 50 with Lancashire paceman Saqib Mahmood claiming a career-best five wicket haul, all clean bowled.

In reply, Somerset spinner Dom Bess took three wickets and restricted the scoring in the middle overs despite resistance from North skipper Mullaney and Warwickshire batsman Sam Hain setting up an unlikely chase.

Surrey’s Sam Curran (3/51) struck twice in two balls to effectively end the North’s hopes and help wrap up a 63-run win.
