England women win T20 series in New Zealand

England women won the three-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand with a five-wicket win in Lincoln.

Kent captain Charlotte Edwards led England for the 200th time and won the toss before fielding first.

It proved to be a wise decision as the tourists restricted the White Ferns to 97 for 9 with two wickets apiece for Heather Knight, Danielle Hazell, Jenny Gunn and Kent's Laura Marsh.

The Farnborough-born all-rounder returned figures of two for 24 as she removed Kate Broadmore and former colleague Erin Bermingham.

In reply, it was not to be a fairytale performance for Edwards, who was bowled by Lea Tahuhu (3-28) before solid contributions from Heather Knight (26 runs from 27 balls), Sarah Taylor (20 off 18) and Kent's Lydia Greenway.

Kent Cricket Academy graduate Greenway hit 25 from 28 balls before Katherine Brunt hit a six to secure the 2-1 series win with eight balls to spare.

Speaking after the game, Kent and England skipper Charlotte Edwards said: “I know there was a lot of hype around my 200th game, but very much within our dressing room it was about us winning this series.

When asked about her own low score of five today, she said: “I dragged one on, but it was not about me today it was about the team and winning another series. It’s a huge honour to get this milestone, but the win was the most important thing.”
