Farrant & Gibbs take 3 wickets each in Lancashire loss

Kent lost the first of a Women’s County Championship double-header at The Spitfire Ground against Lancashire.

After a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the Manchester attack on Monday, Lancashire compiled an opening stand of 96 through Evelyn Jones (44) and Emma Lamb (52) which vindicated the decision to bat first.

Grace Gibbs got the breakthrough for Kent, dismissing Lamb, before a smart return catch from Jenni Jackson removed Jones.

New Zealand all-rounder Amy Sattherwaite hit 32 before being run-out by Kent captain Tammy Beaumont then Laura Marsh bowled Natalie Brown and stymied the scoring.

Tash Farrant struck three times in her second spell to end with 3-31 and Gibbs grabbed two more to claim 3/36 from ten tidy overs.

In reply, Kent never got going as Beaumont attempted the anchor role as Rachel Dickinson ripped through the order with three of her first five wickets coming in a superb spell.

The skipper and vice-captain Alice Davidson-Richards added 44 for the fourth wicket before both players fell in successive overs by England spinner Sophie Ecclestone.

Phoebe Franklin and Lauren Griffiths were the only others to reach double figures as England international Alex Hartley and White Fern Sattherwaite struck before Dickinson completed a five-wicket haul to secure a 84-run win.
