Hunn takes wickets and Claydon scores 50 for Newcastle City

Matt Hunn took three wickets and top-scored with the bat for Newcastle City as they took on league leaders Merewether.

Despite Hunn's heroics and a half-century from captain Mitch Claydon, City lost on first innings after a strong start.

The top-ranked Queensland First Grade side batted first after winning the toss and recovered from 93 for six to post 255 in 83 overs.

Matt Hunn dismissed both openers and finished with 3/40 off 14 overs with Ben Harmison taking 1/10 off three overs and skipper Claydon bowling seven maidens in 13 overs, which cost just 13 runs.

In reply, Claydon (17) and Hunn (32) were the only players to make double figures as City were all out for 91.

City were reduced to 14-4 when Harmison departed for 2 and the biggest partnership was 16 for the ninth and tenth wickets.

Following on, City fared better with Harmison (29), Claydon (58) and Hunn (six not out) making contributions on day two’s total of 185 for eight.
