James Tredwell plays for England in second ODI defeat in Sri Lanka

Saturday 29th November 2014

A minute's silence was observed in memory of Phil Hughes before England lost the second one-day international versus Sri Lanka at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

England wore black armbands in honour of the Australia batsman who died this week after being hit by a ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Morning rain shortened the match to a 45-over affair as England looked to level the seven-match series.

After winning the toss, England elected to bat first but lost early wickets as Moeen Ali (2), Ian Bell (11), Alastair Cook (22) and Eoin Morgan (17) failed to make the most of the opening 9-over powerplay.

Joe Root (42) and Ravi Bopara (51) steadied the ship at 75-4, adding 42 before Root was trapped LBW by Angelo Matthews.

After Buttler departed for 7, Bopara tried to bat with the tail and added 41 with Woakes before the last four wickets fell for 12 runs.

James Tredwell was not out on 9 as England made 185 off 43 overs.

England made early in-roads In the Sri Lanka reply with fit-again Steven Finn removing Kusal Perera and Moeen Ali dismissing fellow opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for 26 to leave the hosts on 37-2.

The experienced duo of Mahela Jayawardene (77) and Kumar Sangakkara (67) saw Sri Lanka home, drawing on a combined experience of 815 ODIs to add 149 for the third-wicket off 160 balls.

It was their 36th three-figure partnership – the second most prolific between two batsman in one-day internationals.

Tredwell bowled nine overs for 47 runs as the Sri Lankans cantered to victory.
