Kent v Essex: Stand-in skipper Darren Stevens hits 50

Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens started pre-season in style with a fluent half-century as Kent got some batting practice in the middle against Essex in the rain-reduced reply of a two-day friendly.

Resuming on three without loss, Daniel Bell-Drummond added 20 more runs before he was bowled by Matt Dixon.

Fabian Cowdrey and Adam Ball were both dismissed in the 13th over by Jamie Porter before Stevens steaded the ship.

The 39-year-old, who celebrates his benefit year in 2016, hit 12 boundaries and a six on his way to 67.

He added 29 with Sean Dickson and then 85 with Academy graduate Zak Crawley who marked his rise to the first-team squad with a composed innings of 35.

Adam Rouse and Calum Haggett then saw out a tricky period under gloomy skies before rain descended and play was abandoned.
