Kent v MCCU: Bell-Drummond makes maiden first class century

Academy graduate, and former England Under 19, Daniel Bell-Drummond scored his maiden first class century today at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury on day one of Kent’s fixture against Cardiff MCCU.

Cardiff MCCU won the toss and put Kent in to bat, on an overcast morning in Canterbury. After a slow start, with Sam Northeast making 14 and Rob Key bowled by Matthew Hobden for 1, Kent gained momentum.

Brendan Nash made a solid 46 before he was bowled by Hobden, who finished with figures of 5 for 89. Mike Powell built a solid partnership with Bell-Drummond and in so doing scored 62 (including8 fours and 2 sixes) before he was run out.

Bell-Drummond was the star of the day, his 102 coming from 13 fours and 3 sixes. Darren Stevens added 36 to Kent’s total and James Tredwell scored a notable 41. Geraint Jones went for one run, and Calum Haggett for a duck, before Kent declared on 333 for 8 from 86 overs.

Cardiff MCCU closed on 33 for 1 from 12 oversbefore stumps.

Due to persistent rain at the St Lawrence Ground no further play was possible after day one. Shortly after 1pm on Friday the match was called off, resulting in a draw.
