Kent v Surrey LV=CC: Day Two of Canterbury Cricket Week

Friday 12th August 2011

Men’s First Team

Close, day two: Kent 266 and 167 for 6, Surrey 127

Darren Stevens took a remarkable career best of 7 for 21 on day two of Kent’s LV=CC match against Surrey at the St Lawrence Ground.

Surrey resumed the second day on 50 for 0, and Stevens soon took Surrey’s Steve Davies, before tearing through the rest of the team. Surrey were eventually all out for just 127, thanks to great bowling from Stevens supported by Adam Ball and Wahab Riaz, giving Kent a first innings lead of 139.

Tim Linley led the Surrey attack, and Kent experienced mixed fortunes during the afternoon, losing Joe Denly (1), Sam Northeast (12) and James Tredwell (7) cheaply. Martin Van Jaarsveld (17), Stevens (21) and Geraint Jones (22) were able to fair slightly better, but Rob Key ended the day on 70 not out, with Kent 167 for 6, with a 306 run lead over Surrey.

The second day of the 160th Canterbury Cricket Week was also significant for Kent Cricket off the field. Kent cricket legends, Derek Underwood and Alan Knott returned to the St Lawrence Ground as honoured guests. At lunch they unveiled the newly named Underwood and Knott Stand and were given a rapturous reception by the large crowd in attendance. This was also Kent Cricket’s traditional Ladies’ Day, and included the ladies’ ‘Fashion on the Outfield’ competition and a military marching band at lunch.
