Wednesday 23rd July 2014

Women

The Kent Cricket Women’s team suffered their first defeat of the season, losing by four runs to Surrey on Day One of the Regional Finals at Hayes Cricket Club. The two day tournament pits hosts Kent against neighbours Surrey and Essex, teams playing each other twice over the two days.

Captain Charlotte Edwards won the toss and inserted Surrey. Whilst this initially paid dividends with Surrey losing opener Heather Jones early (out for 2, 11/1), through the efforts of Natalie Sciver, 58, and support of the other batters, Surrey managed to post a very respectable 134 for 7 in their 20 overs. Noteworthy bowlers for Kent were Alice Davidson-Richards, 4 overs, 13 runs and 2 wickets and Erin Bermingham, 4 overs, 28 runs and 3 wickets.

Like Surrey the openers were separated early in the chase, Laura Marsh run out for 2 when the score was 13. Edwards and Tamsin Beaumont then steady the chased, putting on 72 for the second wicket, Edwards out for 41 bowled by Cecil Scott. The almost immediate loss of Lydia Greenway quickly took the score from 85/2 to 88/3. Beaumont battled on, eventually falling for 64 from 57 balls, another run out, 100 – 4. In a tense final over Kent needed 14 to win but came up just short, ending 130 for the loss of 5 wickets.

The second match of the day was between the victorious Surrey Women and Essex. Batting first Surrey made 161 for the loss of three, beating Essex by 38 runs. In the chase Essex managed 123 for the loss of 7 in their 20 overs.

The final match of the day had the two beaten teams facing each other, knowing that a second loss would make qualification to finals day very difficult.

Essex won the toss and decided to bat, a decision they may have regretted in hindsight. At the end of their 20 overs they had managed to amass 58 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Wicket takers were Erin Bermingham, 4 wickets for 7 runs in 4 overs, Megan Belt 2 wickets for 16 runs in 4 and Grace Gibbs 1 wicket, 6 runs and 2 overs. Kent chased down the total without the loss of any wickets, in only 6.5 overs. Charlotte Edwards was clinical in her attack, taking 26 deliveries to reach 49 ( 9×4), with Lydia Greenway also finishing not out on12.
