THEKent Spitfires have given themselves an excellent chance of reaching the knockout stages of the Twenty20 Cup after a thrilling one-run win over Surrey Brown Caps at the Brit Oval.

Set 169 to win, Surrey’s target from the final over was reduced to just eight when Spitfires were handed a six-run penalty for a slow over rate.

With the last pair at the wicket, you felt Kent were slight favourites before South African Andre Nel struck a four to leave the Brown Caps needing just three runs from four deliveries.

Advantage Surrey but bowler Ryan McLaren and fielder Martin van Jaarsveld (pictured) kept their composure to run out last man Jade Dernbach as the home side tried to complete a tight single.

Earlier on van Jaarsveld (54) and skipper Rob Key (44) were the chief run scorers as the Spitfires posted a decent total of 168 for six from their 20 overs.

The victory for Kent lifts them up to second in the South Division table, a point behind leaders Sussex Sharks, who have played a game more.

The Kent Spitfires are back in action against on Friday when they play the Hampshire Hawks at The Rose Bowl.
