Player Biography
Joe Denly was the first Canterbury-born cricketer to be capped by the Club in 2008. A product of the Kent Cricket Academy, the right-hander is widely regarded as one of the most attractive strokemakers on the county circuit.
Originally making his Kent debut in 2004, Denly was a part of the Kent Spitfires side that lifted the 2007 Twenty20 Cup, making 231 appearances for Kent before spending three seasons at Middlesex until his return in 2015.
He improved his career-best score in 2016 with a double-hundred against Northamptonshire & bettered it again with 227 at Worcester in the following season. 2017 was a golden year for Denly (but not so golden as 2018 turned out to be): he scored more than 1,800 runs in all formats & was the top scorer in the NatWest T20 Blast.
Denly played a part in three Club records: sharing a club record of 382 with Sean Dickson in the Championship before hitting the top individual T20 score of 127 at Chelmsford in a world record T20 opening stand of 207 with Daniel Bell-Drummond. His exploits earned him the 2017 Spitfire One-Day Player & Batter of the Year awards.
In 2018, Denly became the first player to ever score a century & take a hat-trick in the same T20 fixture, away at Surrey in the Vitality Blast. The end of the 2018 saw Denly scoop up the PCA’s Vitality Blast & Royal London One-Day Cup Most Valuable Player Awards, as well as the overall 2018 County MVP Award.
His form in 2018 earned him a maiden England Test call-up that Winter, becoming the first male player born in Canterbury to play a Test for England.
He featured in every 2019 Ashes Test match, contributing a 50 in Ben Stokes’ Test at Headingley, & a career top score of 94 in the last matches of the series as England secured a 2-2 draw.
In 2021, Denly became one of two players to have won a T20 trophy twice as a Kent player, taking best figures of 3-31 against Somerset in the Final on the way to victory, dismissing Tom Banton without scoring in his first over.
After being named as Kent Spitfires captain for the 2022 Royal London Cup, Denly led the county to lift the trophy for the first time in 1974, beating Lancashire at Trent Bridge on 17 September.
He is one of six Kent male batters to have scored a century of more for the county across all three formats of the game.
