Biography

Shirt partner – Anthony Fernau

The Kent skipper continues to lead from the front in his seventh year in charge at the St Lawrence Ground. His runs, in all forms of the game, make the former England international a hugely integral figure at the club and a much-loved character on the county circuit.

The statistics say it all about the opener who scores all around the wicket. Nearly 16,000 first class runs since his debut in 1998, well over 5,000 in one-day cricket and a tally of 1,659 t20 runs saw him earn a call-up to England’s World Cup squad in 2009. His prolific form continues to impress.

Rob’s early career runs put him in contention for international honours and he made his test debut back in 2002, scoring 17 against the touring Indian side. The highlight of his 15 match test career was undoubtedly the day when he dominated the West Indian bowling attack, back in 2004. The right-hander flayed the tourists to all parts of Lord’s on his way to a majestic knock of 221. The innings is widely regarded as one of the more memorable in the longest form of the game. His test match average of 31 belies his obvious talent but the Kent captain continues to score heavily in the domestic game.

Last season he hit two memorable centuries against Surrey and looked set to surpass the magic 1,000 run barrier again before a wrist injury curtailed his season. An operation to repair the damage was successfully completed over the winter and Key will once again be looking to lead his young charges with vigour in 2012.
