Chance to Shine is a national charity that aims to give all children the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket and they believe that cricket can help to develop the personal, social and physical skills of the almost 600,000 children that they work with every year.

As a Chance To Shine partner, Kent Cricket’s specialist coaches deliver over 170 school programmes, free of charge, every year across the county to provide children with a brilliant first experience of cricket and, in Bromley, we are proud to work directly with over 50% of primaries.

As well as the physical benefits of regular activity, we use cricket to teach children important key life skills that will help them beyond the playground and through the values of cricket, we teach children about respect and fair play.

Cricket is also an effective way to develop skills like communication, leadership and perseverance that will benefit them throughout their life.

We believe that cricket is an inclusive sport, where girls and boys can play and learn together and with Chance To Shine, we think that normalising female participation in cricket is a hugely important and valuable part of the work that we do.

Programme Models

We know no two schools are the same and as a result, we work with school management, subject leads and teachers to adapt our programmes to best effect with each school. However, there are two basic models of delivery programme that cover the majority of our term-time work:

Whole School Programme

  • Whole-term delivery, suitable for both KS 1 & 2, available all year round
  • Six-week programme built around weekly, national-curriculum-aligned cricket lessons
  • ‘Is cricket a game for me?’ inspirational assembly championing fair play, inclusion and respect
  • Bespoke CPD session for all staff
  • Playground & Sports Leader training
  • Access to Chance to Shine Portal with curriculum-mapped lesson plans co-written with the Youth Sports Trust

Engagement Days

  • One-off cricket taster days for KS1 & KS2
  • Each session provides helpful CPD / team-teaching opportunities
  • Delivery of an ‘Is cricket a game for me?’ inspirational assembly championing fair play, inclusion and respect
  • Connect pupils to local volunteer-led cricket clubs who deliver All Stars Cricket (5-8) or Dynamos Cricket (8-11)
  • Useful preparation for intra/inter-school competitions and for promoting your own after-school programmes

For Teachers

We understand that running PE lessons is sometimes a daunting prospect and the idea of teaching a cricket-based PE lesson can be doubly so.

All of our in-school delivery is focused, not only on child enjoyment and development, but also on fun and engaging continuous professional development for teachers.
Throughout our Whole School Programme, class teachers are given lesson plans ahead of each session and through the six weeks, our coaches work with them to help develop confidence and experience delivering cricket-based lessons. Usually, by the final week, the teachers surprise themselves by running the whole lesson!

Alongside this one-to-one practical help, all teachers and TAs can register, free of charge, on the Chance To Shine teachers’ portal.
This allows access to a host of free-to-use active lesson plans & games along with Key-Stage specific, National Curriculum-aligned lessons and resources in maths and English.

Here’s some examples:

For Trust Leads, PE Leads & Subject Coordinators

Over the past few years, we have been working at trust and academy level with a number of schools across Bromley.
This top-down approach has already realised significant benefits to the children, the teachers and the schools and this approach has recently been featured in this article reporting on our work with The Spring Trust.

What has already become apparent is that there are very clear advantages to coordinating programme delivery, CPD and inter-group competition at an organisational level and it has significantly improved cricket uptake and engagement in the individual schools.
