The Kent Cricket Foundation believes that taking part in physical activity can have a profound and positive impact on mental wellbeing, improve mood and decrease the chance of depression and as well as anti-social behaviour.
Through our First Change programme, regular cricket sessions offer young people a sense of stability and familiarity—often the only constant in their lives as they navigate the challenges of displacement. Being part of a team goes beyond the game itself; it fosters healing, resilience, and a sense of belonging as they rebuild their lives in the United Kingdom.
Our ultimate goal is to support these young people in joining local cricket clubs, creating a pathway to connection and growth. By delivering a county-wide cricket programme, we aim to provide holistic support that complements the efforts of the Home Office, local authorities, community organisations, and education providers. From coaching sessions and training for coaching certifications to introductions to over 260 cricket clubs, we’re opening doors to meaningful opportunities.
Cricket’s unique ability to unite people makes it a powerful tool for refugees and asylum seekers. It offers them a familiar and safe space to feel part of a community while enjoying a sport they’re passionate about. These moments on the pitch allow them to relax, share their stories, and find joy—reminding them that, even far from home, they are not alone.
Our key outcomes are as such:
- Accessible community cricket coaching sessions
- Access to watch local and county cricket, being able to bring all refugee & asylum seekers to Kent Cricket venues
- Access to cricket equipment, especially for those who play hard-ball cricket
- Community integration
How To Make A Referral
Referrals to our programme can be made by anyone who has direct contact with a refugee or asylum seeker and would like support in helping them to either join a cricket programme, a cricket club or require support with sourcing kit. Usually these are made by our community partners, social service team or reception centres, however, we are happy to help wherever possible. Resettled refugees can also self-refer into our programs.

Information for Cricket Clubs
One of our goals with the First Change programme is to get our resettled young people into a local cricket club. Being a part of a cricket team and club provides a real feeling of engagement and acceptance. It enables the young people to be seen by people other than in a ‘charitable or needy’ way, and show cases the skills that the young people may have to offer to British society.
