Azhar looks forward to Durham Dynamos T20 QF test

Saturday 25th July 2009

KEY all-rounder Azhar Mahmood (pictured) is desperate to help the Kent Spitfires to Twenty20 Finals Day, for the third year in a role. The former Surrey Brown Caps star has proved a key figure for Kent with the ball this season, but hasn“t enjoyed as many opportunities with the bat. Talking to the official website, in the lead-up to tomorrow“s big Twenty20 Cup quarter final with the Durham Dynamos, he said: “Hopefully I can make a difference on the day. I will be trying my hardest for the team. I love all forms of the game but T20 is very special. It is an amazing competition and I have been fortunate enough to enjoy finals day with both Surrey and Kent.”

So, what makes the competition so special? “Well, I guess, the crowd helps. We play in front of lots of people and that will obviously be the case against Durham too. We need our supporters to get behind the team. They always generate a good atmosphere and it“s important that we use our home advantage and make it count.”

Azhar has bowled beautifully this season, with both the new and the old ball. How does he rate his own personal contribution? “I would agree, things have gone well with the ball but I haven“t really had a chance with the bat. We have such a strong line-up that the likes of me and Kempy (Justin Kemp) haven“t really been able to get in. We have had the odd chance but generally the guys further up the order have performed well for us.”

And what about Durham – how highly does Azhar rate them as opponents? “Durham are a quality side. We saw how good they are in last year“s Friends Provident Trophy semi-final. I know we won that game but they played well and pushed us hard. We should certainly never underestimate them, and we won“t, but we are playing some good cricket at the moment and fancy ourselves against any side. It will be a great game and I cannot wait for it to start.”
