Billings to join Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022 IPL

Kent Captain Sam Billings has been picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

The 2021 Vitality Blast-winning skipper was acquired for ₹2.00Cr (around £195,000) by the team based at Eden Gardens and coached by former New Zealand big-hitter, Brendon McCullum.

Ten franchises, including two new sides, competed to fill 217 available player slots from the talent pool of 600 in this year’s ‘mega auction’.

Billings led Kent Spitfires to their first trophy in 14 years last season, earning a Spitfire Player of the Match award following his knock of 56 against Birmingham Bears in the Quarter Final held at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in August.

After making his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils in 2016, the right-hander was a part of the Chennai Super Kings side that won the 2018 tournament, and has three half-centuries to his name in what is viewed as one of the most competitive leagues in sport.

His 54 on IPL debut made the wicketkeeper-batter the second player ever to score 50 or more in their first foray into the tournament.

Elsewhere, a number of former Spitfires have also been acquired by the ten franchises:

  • Kagiso Rabada – Punjab Kings – ₹9.25Cr
  • Faf du Plessis – Royal Challengers Bangalore – ₹7.00Cr
  • Dwayne Bravo – Chennai Super Kings – ₹4.40Cr
  • Mohammad Nabi – Kolkata Knight Riders – ₹1.00Cr
  • Jimmy Neesham – Rajastan Royals – ₹1.50Cr
  • Adam Milne – Chennai Super Kings – ₹1.90Cr

Kent Spitfires’ Vitality Blast overseas star Qais Ahmad was unsold in the auction.
