Blakey’s Blog – 6 April

Wednesday 6th April 2011

The countdown is nearly over. We’re now only 2 days from that much anticipated first delivery of the 2011 season at Chelmsford and I must say I’m very excited for it to finally get underway. As we strive to bounce straight back up into the top tier, our first test comes against a strong Essex outfit. As the other side to follow us down last year, they will also undoubtedly be looking to go back up at the first attempt and will provide us with a stern examination. Time to string together all the hard work of the winter and pre-season and start the season with a bang.

Saying that I have actually already had my first game of the season in the form of a 3-day fixture against Worcestershire. In a weekend fixture for my university Leeds/Bradford we definitely did ourselves proud against a first class side. A good setup at New Road allowed me to get some decent batting time in the middle against good bowlers, so I was happy with what I got out of the game.

Yesterday saw us host Sussex in the final friendly game of our pre-season. Rain all morning meant for a lunchtime start whereby we batted first. The top 4 again looked in good nick, which is good news for that first game. A further downpour meant we only had 20 overs to bowl at them, in which all the seamers got a spell under their belts.

Today is the annual press day meaning plenty of pictures and plenty of bat signing. I will be taking my pot of gel to make sure the hair is in good order, as well as my smile and a pen! There will also be a chance for the media to get their interviews from various coaches and players, as they give their thoughts on the upcoming season.

And then we’re off to Chelmsford. With hand warmers at the ready, I just hope it’s a bit warmer than it was at Canterbury yesterday!
