Charlotte Edwards nominated for LG ICC People’s Choice Award

Kent Women's Player of the Year Charlotte Edwards could follow in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar after being shortlisted for this year’s ICC People’s Choice Award.

Edwards has been included in a high-profile list to win the 'fan-picked' honour first presented to India’s legendary batsman Tendulkar in 2010.

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews, Dale Steyn of South Africa and India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the other nominees.

Cricket fans will get the opportunity to decide the winner, who will be presented with the trophy at the ICC’s annual awards in Dubai on Wednesday 5 November.

Edwards, who would become the first female to win the coveted trophy, earned her nomination after steering England to back-to-back Ashes successes in Australia last winter.

The 34-year-old also led limited-overs series win against India and South Africa this summer, hitting a record-breaking ninth hundred in the 50-over format along the way.

The shortlist for the award was decided by a four-member elite panel of cricket experts which included former England international and BBC broadcaster Jonathan Agnew.

ICC chief executive David Richardson said: "The support of the fans is vital for the game and particularly valued by the players – hence, the significance of the LG People’s Choice award.

“The overwhelming number of cricket fans who participate to select the winner of this award has made it one of the most prestigious awards in the ICC calendar.

“None of the deserving nominees have won this award before and this year’s fan favourite will join the exclusive company of previous winners, Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Kumar Sangakkara (2011 and (2012) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2013).”
