Claydon takes six wickets in opening weekend Down Under

Mitch Claydon took two wickets in his first match of the season for Newcastle City on Saturday.

The 32-year-old paceman took 2/46 off 10 overs as opponents Charlestown posted 252-8 after winning the toss.

Captain Claydon smashed 20 off eight balls including two fours and a six, batting at number six as City lost by 53 runs.

On Sunday, he played two T20s for the Newcastle Steel district side, taking 2/24 and 2/22 in two fine four-over spells.

Steel beat Illawarra by eight wickets before losing to Randwick-Petersham later in the day.

Elsewhere in New South Wales, Fabian Cowdrey's Western Suburbs took on St George in the Sydney First Grade.

St George won the toss and scored 319 for six with Cowdrey's 17 overs costing just 47 runs.

Wests resume next weekend on seven without loss and the 22-year-old Kent all-rounder set to bat at four.

Cowdrey's T20 debut Down Under ended in defeat as he took 3-22 and scored 13 as Wests fell 50 runs short of the 177 posted by Blacktown.
