Club President Concludes Girls’ Countdown Season

Sunday 4th September 2022

The Kent Cricket U11 Girls’ Countdown Festival programme has drawn to a close after a successful first year.

Yvonne Neame, the Kent Cricket Club President, visited Ashford Town Cricket Club for the final Girls’ Cricket Countdown Festival of the year, to see Bexley Cricket Club once again crowned champions.

The Countdown Cricket format introduce this year is a simplified version of cricket, where the number of balls in the second innings are counted down, akin to The 100. The format for the festival matches is 6 a side pairs cricket, played on pitches that are 16 yards long and played in sets (not overs). In addition, the players get a ‘free hit’ which they can hit off a rubber tee after every extra.

For the 2022 season, Kent Cricket adopted this format for the four festival programme as detailed below.

SUNDAY 29 MAY       Bromley CC                      Bexley CC Champions
SUNDAY 19 JUNE      Sandwich Town CC        Bexley CC Champions
SUNDAY 26 JUNE     Marden CC                       Mersham CC Champions
SUNDAY 17 JULY       Ashford Town CC            Bexley CC Champions

Champions Bexley were subsequently then entered into the Regional Playoffs vs Surrey, where they beat Chobham CC in a thrilling final over. This meant progression into the Southern Counties Finals, hosted at Raynes Park Sports Ground in London. With two wins across the day including a convincing win vs Southwater Cricket Club, Bexley became Southern Counties Champions and took the trophy back to Kent.
