Groundo’s prepared to prepare!

This week, Kent Cricket in partnership with The GMA have completed two pitch preparation seminars, for 34 groundstaff.

Promoted by the Kent Cricket League and Kent County Village League, the three hour sessions were available for just £10 to affiliated clubs or £25 for general admission.

The two sessions were the latest in a recent series of informal support opportunities for groundo’s. Those in attendance ranged from ‘brand new to the role’ through to those who had been in post for decades, looking to share ideas and problem solve with their opposite numbers.

Also present was Robert Jack of the Howardson Group, who manufacture brands such as Dennis and Sisis. To start each session, Robert ran through the importance of mowers being setup correctly, both for the health of the machine and the grass plant. Before giving a hands-on demonstration of how to check this, and make necessary adjustments.

Working with the resident grounds-manager, Phil Jeggo proceeded to deliver a masterclass on the best practice steps for preparing consistent pitches. In surprise to some, it was shared that individual pitch preparation should commence between 7 and 14 days prior to being played on. However, this is significantly impacted by the resources available to each club along with environmental conditions.

Kent Cricket would like to extend their appreciation to both Chestfield CC and Eynsford CC for hosting these events, and specifically to the Grounds manager’s Paul and Stewart for their involvement.
