Ford previews Glamorgan Pro40 tie

Sunday 19th July 2009

THE Kent Spitfires begin their Nat West Pro40 campaign tomorrow with a game against Glamorgan, in Cardiff. The Spitfires go into the match on the back of a morale-boosting innings and 45-run victory, over the same opponents, in the LV County Championship.

Some are questioning the importance of the Pro40 with no promotion or relegation, in its last season, but Kent“s Director of Cricket Graham Ford (pictured) is fully intent on putting in a good display: “At this stage, the game is quite important for us. All of the guys want to get some time with the white ball, ahead of next Monday“s big T20 quarter-final against Durham at Canterbury. That is a massive game for us so playing well in this one is important. We want to be ready for next week, so this is an important little outing for us.”

Over the last month, results have been excellent, in all-competitions, and Ford thinks he knows the reason why: “We asked the guys to work hard to try and improve their individual games. Each player has taken on his own game, as a project, and it appears to be working. We have seen some really good performances in the last month – people have found some real good form and played some good cricket along the way. We have got lots of points in the bag and played a high quality level of cricket.”

The Spitfires go into tomorrow“s game at full-strength – but were there any thoughts about resting key individuals, ahead of Durham Dynamos next Monday? “No. At this stage, it“s about giving players time to work on their skills with the white ball. We get a bit of a breather after this one before next week“s T20. Everyone is looking forward to playing in that one and getting the opportunity to play with the white ball at the Swalec Stadium certainly won“t do us any harm.”

The Kent Spitfires bring Azhar Mahmood and James Hockley into their 12-man squad. Amjad Khan and Matt Coles, who was 12th man for the Championship win, are the two to miss out.

The full side is as follows: Key (C), Denly, Jones (W), van Jaarsveld, Stevens, Kemp, Mahmood, Parnell, McLaren, Tredwell, Cook, Hockley
