Calum Haggett hit a fluent 50 as Kent narrowly lost to an experienced Middlesex side in the Second XI Trophy at The County Ground, Beckenham.

The 27-year-old all-rounder struck five fours and a six before being bowled by England paceman Steven Finn, one of three internationals in the visiting side.

He added 55 for the sixth wicket with Alex Blake who overcame illness to hit four fours and two sixes before falling to Australia-born leg-spinner Nathan Sowter as Kent posted 222 with cameos of 20 runs from Kashif Ali and Imran Qayyum.

The three frontline seamers each claimed a wicket with Haggett, Miles Richardson of Sevenoaks Vine and Folkestone fast bowler Jarred Lysaught claiming a wicket.

Opener George Scott played the anchor role with 72 off 75 balls before falling to Qayyum as the 24-year-old left-armer picked up 2/25 in ten tidy overs.

Kent off-spinner Adam Riley (2/47) also made vital in-roads in the middle overs and Grant Stewart took two fine catches in the deep.

With Middlesex seven down, spinners Sowter (52*) and Ravi Patel (41*) combined to add an unbeaten 92 off 101 balls for the eighth wicket.

Kent play Middlesex at the same venue in a three-day Championship fixture starting on Wednesday (9 May).
