Head Coach pleased with pre-season

After the end of Kent’s final pre-season match of this year against Worcestershire, we caught up with Head Coach Matt Walker to get his thoughts on our preparations as we prepare to get underway for the 2021 season.

“It’s been a slightly different pre-season, hampered by weather, certainly in the first week.

“The lads have worked absolutely brilliantly. Their attitude has been excellent throughout, and they’ve managed to find a way to to get what they needed during this period.

“I think the build-up from the second week of full pre-season onwards has been really good, with three practice matches in the schedule.

“For this group that’s really important – to get a competitive feeling again – playing against some opposition.

“Everyone’s had a good time in the middle with the bat, the bowlers have got through spells, and I think we’re peaking really nicely.

“The lads have all contributed across the board – not everyone can get quite what they want during these sorts of games, but we’ve tried to make it that most people have had what they need in terms of preparations.

“The performances over this pre-season schedule as a whole have been really good.

“Our final game against Worcestershire was a cold one, that’s for sure, but the lads rose to that challenge really well. It was slightly more of a ‘realistic’ first innings with the bat, the ball doing a bit more than it had done in our two previous games, but the guys got through it well with some great individual performances.

“With the ball, we’ve managed to get all of our seamers through some really good spells. I thought that they bowled really well.

“We’ve certainly grown into games this pre-season, but at the end of the day, this schedule was all about overs in the legs for everybody.

“I think it’s been a really worthwhile exercise to have these three games – we’re very happy with how it’s gone and we’re all looking forward to Northamptonshire on Thursday.”

Kent’s first game of the 2021 season begins at The County Ground, Northampton against Northamptonshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship.
