Jones joins Soccer Elite FA for charity Twenty20

Sunday 18th August 2013

Cricket and football fans were out in force earlier this week when Kent Cricket’s Geraint Jones and Balread’s Robin Stanton-Gleaves helped Soccer Elite FA to raise over £2,000 for Demelza Hospice Care for Children and Teens Unite Fighting Cancer in a unique charity Twenty20 match.

Hundreds watched as Leeds and Broomfield All Stars took on Soccer Elite and Pro Stars at Leeds and Broomfield Cricket Club’s home ground, with some of the Pro Stars’ side wielding a cricket bat for the first time.

The hosts batted first, and despite having the more experienced line up the visitors took wickets at regular intervals. Geraint Jones joined Soccer Elite and Pro Stars, chipping away at the Leeds and Broomfield All Stars’ batting line up, with wickets falling thick and fast.

Former Kent and England fast bowler Martin McCague was one of the first back to the Pavilion as Simon Beard showed his prowess with the ball, and Danny Spiller claimed a wicket in his first over.

Some unusual bowling and a superb catch followed, which saw Leeds and Broomfield All Stars accumulate 143 from their 20 overs, with Jones claiming a wicket. Steve Wolfe and Tunbridge Wells FC winger Josh Stanford both bagged fine catches for the side, led by Balread’s Robin Stanton-Gleaves.

Soccer Elite and Pro Stars opened their batting with brothers Danny and Lee Spiller, the pair showing an array of batting styles, some a little unorthodox!

The wickets tumbled and Jones came in at five, smashing the ball around the picturesque ground which overlooks Leeds Castle.

Despite their prowess on the football field, Soccer Elite and Pro Stars’ Tony Browne, Stuart Bell and former Charlton Athletic defender Richard Rufus found batting somewhat out of their comfort zone, but managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over, and Jones was there to see the side through to what was a thrilling tie.

With the Twenty 20 game proving such a success, plans are already being made for a bigger and better event next year. For Soccer Elite FA, it is straight back to the day job, with Academy fixtures against Arsenal on Thursday 22nd August and a special invite to Cowes, on the Isle of Wight to take on Portsmouth on Friday 30th August.
