Kent“s ground co-ordinator Andy Peirson (pictured)has been specially commended by the England & Wales Cricket Board in the 2009 Groundsman of the Year awards.

In his first full season in charge at Canterbury, Peirson earned a commendation in the four-day pitch category.

Commenting, Kent“s acting chief executive officer, Jamie Clifford, said: “The work of Andy, and his team of dedicated, hard working ground staff is certainly deserving of praise, and we are delighted that he has earned a commendation for preparing quality championship pitches throughout the season. The wicket preparation clearly helped Rob Key and the team to play some excellent cricket. I am sure it was a factor in winning the LV=CC division two championship.”

Every pitch is rated at the end of the match by each of the umpires. The winners of each category are the groundsmen whose pitches have achieved the highest average rating across the course of the season.
