Kent v Essex: Adam Riley picks up four wickets in 14 balls

Kent warmed up for the Specsavers County Championship season by dismissing neighbours Essex for 249 on day one of a two-day friendly at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

Adam Riley wrapped up the tail with four wickets in 14 balls after Mitch Claydon and Darren Stevens struck twice each earlier in the day.

England Test captain Alastair Cook struck 14 boundaries in a score of 88 before Matt Coles deflected a straight drive onto the stumps to run out the opener.

Coles broke the deadlock by bowling Jaik Mickleburgh for 17 before Ravi Bopara nicked Darren Stevens to Kent's new wicketkeeper Adam Rouse, who pouched two catches.

Mitch Claydon led the fightback after lunch, trapping Daniel Lawrence LBW before James Foster edged behind to Rouse.

Darren Stevens, who captained the side in the absence of Sam Northeast, picked up the wicket of Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate LBW before Riley's quartet of wickets including a fine catch behind by substitute keeper Jake Hutson.
