Kent’s hopes of forcing a draw at Old Trafford were boosted when persistent rain meant only 27 overs were bowled on day three. During this time, Lancashire extended their lead to 284 with seven second wickets still remaining.

Despite gloomy conditions, play got under way just ten minutes after schedule and Kent pacemen Makhaya Ntini and Amjad Khan (pictured)caused problems but three dropped catches meant that Rob Key’s men went wicketless in the short spell of play available. Firstly James Hockley shelled Mark Chilton off Amjad’s bowling and then Darren Stevens failed to hold onto a sharp chance just after South African Ashwell Prince had reached his half-century.

The visitors misery was then compounded when Ntini dropped a regulation catch at long leg off the bowling of Matt Coles as Prince and Chilton added 109 at four runs per over. As the heavens opened Prince ended unbeaten on 71 with Chilton still there on 52.

With more rain expected on Friday, Rob Key’s side will be looking to come back from Manchester with a draw.
