Match Preview: Derbyshire vs. Kent Spitfires

Derbyshire are the next opponents for Kent Spitfires in their final away match in Group B of the 2022 Royal London Cup, hosted at the Incora County Ground, Derby.

Ben Compton’s 87 runs in Kent’s win over the Northamptonshire Steelbacks on Sunday takes him up to 238 tournament runs so far at the top of the order, and heads up the Spitfires’ batting tables alongside tournament centurions Joey Evison & Ollie Robinson – the latter having set a new Club record with 206* against Worcestershire Rapids.

Hamid Qadri’s new career-best of four wickets for 36 means he now sits atop of the Spitfires’ wicket-taking charts with nine, followed by Matt Quinn (7) & four wickets each for Evison, Nathan Gilchrist & Navdeep Saini.

With the top three sides qualifying for the Quarter Finals of the tournament, the Spitfires will need to win their next three 50-over matches, with home ties against Yorkshire Vikings & Lancashire at Canterbury in the coming days.

Derbyshire’s record in the competition is identical to Kent’s, with two victories in their first five matches. Victory for either side in this match will take them above the other in the table.

Left-handed opening batter Luis Reece has 221 tournament runs at 44.20, and wicketkeeper-batter Brooke Guest has scored 190 in total, including two scores of 50 or more.

Ben Aitchison’s right-arm seam has attributed eight wickets at 18.50 in the 2022 Royal London Cup, whilst Sam Conners, who featured for England Lions against South Africa at Canterbury last week, has six wickets at 23.00.

Grant Stewart returns after recovering from injury to Kent’s 13-strong squad to make the trip to Derby.

Tawanda Muyeye has been ruled out of this match with odontalgia, which requires treatment. He is expected to make a quick recovery.

George Linde is managing an a knee injury & is expected to be fit for South Africa’s domestic season. Darren Stevens is expected to make a full recovery in the coming weeks from his calf injury.

Joe Denly is named in the squad of 13 after recovering from a minor back injury.
