Last Time Out

Centuries from Ricardo Vasconcelos and Nathan McSweeney helped Northamptonshire secure maximum batting bonus points as their rain-affected Rothesay County Championship Division Two promotion clash with Kent ended in a draw at Wantage Road.

With the match destined for a draw after rain washed out day three, collecting bonus points was the priority for both Kent and Northamptonshire, who were separated by just four points in second and third place respectively at the start of the match.

Opposition Report

Previewed by Brian Halford, ECB Reporters Network, supported by Rothesay

  • Captain: Brett D’Oliveira
  • Head coach: Alan Richardson
  • 2025 finish: 10th (in Division One, relegated)

  • 2025 highest wicket-taker: Tom Taylor (58)

Worcestershire have signed South African all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel on a red-ball contract for 2026. The 27-year-old will be available for the whole Rothesay County Championship season, his second stint in England after a spell with Kent in 2024. Despite the recent yo-yo history having continued with relegation last year, the squad assembled by the Pears over recent years appears strong enough to challenge for another promotion.

The batting looks interesting. The Pears will look to Jake Libby for the customary crucial top-order anchor with the youthful exuberance of Dan Lategan and Isaac Mohammed fledging into the side around him. With Adam Hose back to fitness after a serious injury sustained in The Hundred, the New Road audience could be in for some entertaining days.

Adaptability has long been the watchword at Worcestershire and as much as ever this winter. Their pre-season plans, already accommodating frequent flooding at New Road, were further hit when a proposed trip to Oman was cancelled due to the war in the Middle East. Such inconvenience and adversity can either break or bond a squad. At New Road it is very much the latter. Expect a promotion challenge from them.

Team News

Men’s Head Coach Adam Hollioake has named a squad of 14 for the visit of Worcestershire.

Bangladesh international seamer Hasan Mahmud has arrived back in the UK for the start of his second stint with Kent in the Rothesay County Championship as planned.

He is joined by fellow compatriot Khaled Ahmed, who has joined the Club until the end of the season.

South Africa’s Keith Dudgeon has also been selected in the 14-strong squad, with two overseas players permitted in a final Playing XI for County Championship fixtures.

Matt Parkinson is not included, with three overseas seamers in the squad and pitch preparations in mind.

Off-spinning all-rounder Bertie Foreman signed a short-term contract until the end of the season earlier this month, and is again selected.

Chris Benjamin will once more take the gloves, with Harry Finch unavailable for selection following a recent irritation of an old injury.

Mikey Cohen, Olly Curtiss, Ben Dawkins & Jas Singh are all featuring for Kent’s Second XI away at Nottinghamshire this week.

Joey Evison has joined Sussex on loan for the remainder of the Summer ahead of his permanent move to Hove on 1 October.

Jaydn Denly remains out with an ankle injury, which is under review and being managed by the Club’s Medical Team.

Corey Flintoff is continuing his recovery following a viral infection, and will shortly begin a return to physical activity.

Sam Billings & Fred Klaassen are on white-ball contracts, and are therefore not considered for selection in the County Championship.

Another white-ball contracted player, Joe Denly, played his final match for Kent on 31 July during the Metro Bank One Day Cup, before his retirement at the end of the season. Denly has been working with the squad in training this week as a batting mentor.
