Kent Spitfires suffered their first home defeat of the Vitality Blast season, by four wickets to Middlesex at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

Luke Hollman pulled Matt Parkinson for the winning six with four balls remaining, after Ryan Higgins 44 hit from 29 balls and Stephen Eskinazi made 40.

Middlesex finished on 178 for six and the win followed a superb recovery with the ball: at one point they looked likely to be chasing a target of well over 200.

Daniel Bell-Drummond made 60 from 38 balls but after plundering 118 from the first 11 overs, Kent were restricted to 173 for eight, Hollman taking two for 18 and Tom Helm two for 24.

Somerset currently sit atop the South Group after winning three of their first five matches, with one defeat coming against the Kent Spitfires at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

A superb century by Sam Billings helped the Kent Spitfires to a four-wicket win over Somerset with four balls to spare, in a Vitality Blast thriller at Canterbury.

Kent were reeling on 37 for four in the fifth over but they were rescued a sensational innings by Billings, who hit a career best 106 from 66 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes.

The Spitfires’ skipper fell in the 19th, but with Kent needing just six from the last six balls, Joey Evison hit the winning runs to complete a brilliant comeback for the hosts, who closed on 198 for six.

Medium-pacer Ben Green is currently the tournament’s top wicket-taker, with 13 at an average of 11.23, whilst right-hander Tom Abell is the tournament’s third-highest run-scorer, with 167 in four innings so far.

Team News

Kent Men’s Head Coach Matt Walker has named a 13-strong squad for the Spitfires’ visit to Taunton.

Barring international call-ups, Zak Crawley is available for Kent throughout the start of the Vitality Blast, especially before the start of England Men’s Test Summer in July.

Jack Leaning (hand) & Wes Agar (shoulder) continue to be ruled out with their respective injuries from the first round of Vitality County Championship fixtures. Beyers Swanepoel misses out due to illness.

The Club is pleased to have sourced a No Objections Certificate (NOC) from the Western Australia Cricket Association to enable overseas seamer Charlie Stobo to join-up with the squad to replace Swanepoel for this match.

Fred Klaassen is unavailable due to injury & misses the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in North America.

Matt Quinn (back) remains unfit due to injury from pre-season. Michael Cohen (stress fracture) has been ruled out of the 2024 season.
