Match Preview: Suffolk vs. Kent Spitfires

Kent Spitfires will don sky blue for the first time this season as 50-over cricket returns with a National County match against Suffolk at Woolpit Cricket Club.

Speaking on this fixture, Kent’s Director of Cricket, Paul Downton, said: “We’re looking forward to visiting Suffolk this weekend to resume the long tradition of matches between First-Class & National Counties, especially as we have had to postpone the fixture for the last two seasons due to COVID-19.

“This will be our first 50-over fixture of the season & we’re expecting a good competitive match which will also provide us with excellent preparation for the up-coming Royal London Cup. We have a mixture of talented young players & experienced old hands hoping to play an exciting brand of cricket.

“I’d like to thank Woolpit Cricket Club & Suffolk for hosting us on Sunday & look forward to a good match played between two competitive teams.”

Opposition report

“A dream come true,” is how head coach Andy Northcote described Suffolk’s upcoming match against the Kent Spitfires.

“Ultimately it’s an opportunity for Suffolk Cricket as a whole to present itself in the best light possible, both on & off the field, with a great day of sport in Suffolk.

“It’s about the game, the players, spectators & volunteers so if these three groups have enjoyed themselves, then I think that’s a win for all involved.”

Not only will it be a big day for Suffolk, but also for Woolpit Cricket Club, where Northcote has played his cricket since moving to the county.

He said: “Woolpit is a small village club that I fell in love with having spent years playing in various corners of the world. The ground is a unique-shaped field maintained in the highest order & a club that does things right when it comes to recreational cricket.

“Our volunteer network is huge & the club’s slogan of ‘one club’ is very much at the front of every decision & therefore makes it a very family-orientated club.

“To host Suffolk is an honour for most of us & to host this game, & the Kent Spitfires, well it’s a dream come true!”

Suffolk will be without Ben Shepperson & Leicestershire’s George Rhodes, who are both unavailable, while left-arm wrist spinner Freddie Heldreich, who is on the staff at Northamptonshire, is injured.

Suffolk squad in full: Jack Beaumont, Darren Batch, Ben Claydon, Alex Oxley, Ben Parker, Darren Ironside, Josh Cantrell, Tom Rash (capt), Matt Allen, Jacob Marston (wkt), Luke Froggatt, Andy Northcote.
