Matt Coles: We’re in a great position

After his first five-wicket haul of 2015, Kent paceman Matt Coles said: “It was an interesting day to say the least and the first time in my career when two wickets have fallen in the opening over of both first innings.

“I just tried to put it full and in the right spots, but although I got the first five it was a collective effort. Ivan Thomas kept it tight at the other end, then Darren Stevens came on later and nipped out another two.

“We just want to polish the job off as quickly as possible on day two and bat better than we did first time around. We didn’t bat well, we know that, but the bowlers executed their plans well and we’re in a great position.”

Though trumped by Coles’ five for 20 haul later in the day, Derbyshire left-armer Footitt said his side had good reason to be pleased with their fielding display.

“We’d have batted first had we had the chance and although the pitch is doing a little bit, it’s not loads. We thought if we could get them eight down for 260 by the end of the day we’d have done well, so we were really pleased to roll them over for just over 200.

“We have to come back on day two and fight for every run we can get now with the few batters we have left then see what happens with the ball.

“I straightened my run-up a little today and I think that helped because I got a little bit of swing. It felt like the ball was coming out well, as it had for most of last season.

"But I must pay credit to Tony Palladino, for him to send down 18 overs for 19 runs at the other end was absolutely fantastic. He did a great job for the team.”
