MCC President Derek Underwood opens new ground

Saturday 1st August 2009

MCC President Derek Underwood (pictured, cutting the ribbon) took time out from his busy schedule today to carry-out the grand opening of Canterbury Cricket Club“s new ground.

After receiving a grant of over £45,000 from the Community Cricket Development Programme, which is administered by the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Club has constructed a new ground at the Polo Farm Sports complex. The grant application was submitted by the club with the support of Clair Gould, Community Cricket Manger for Kent Cricket Board.

Commenting on the new project, the former Kent and England cricket icon, Derek Underwood, said: “I“m delighted to be able to play a small part in something that will help current and future generations of Canterbury Cricket Club cricketers. The Kent Cricket Board does so much good work, across the county, and it“s pleasing to see them supporting a great project like this come to fruition.”

Canterbury Club Chairman Grahame Bennett added: “We are thrilled to get this funding which is a tangible benefit of being a Clubmark accredited Focus Club. We have been working closely with the Kent Cricket Board for some time and are grateful for their support. As one of a handful of Clubs in Kent delivering the “Chance to Shine” programme, we are working very hard to encourage more youngsters to come into the sport. This facility will provide a tremendous boost.”

The wicket played well as a Chairman“s X1 took on a Club X1 in front of a hearty crowd. The new ground will be completed and ready for regular use in 2010.
