Podmore makes most of late call-up

Paceman Harry Podmore picked up a career-best 4/57 to help Kent Spitfires reach the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-finals after replacing Mitch Claydon who was sidelined by a groin strain on the eve of the match.

The Australian tweaked his leg in practice on Wednesday and the 23-year-old made the most of his opportunity by taking three wickets in a dazzling opening spell in only his second one-day match for the Spitfires.

Following almost 230 overs in the field in Kent’s Specsavers County Championship draw at Bristol, the former Middlesex man overcame fitness concerns of his own to remove the Outlaws’ top three batsmen at Trent Bridge.

Podmore said: “I wasn’t down to play because this came off the back of a long four-day game and Mitch has been playing in the white ball stuff but unfortunately his groin was a bit sore so it was nice to get the nod.

“It was a good toss to win and it was bowler-friendly conditions, so that helped in our favour with our seam bowlers. There was a little bit of nip and with the new ball it skidded on if you hit good areas.

“I’m really enjoying my time at Kent and my aim was to come here and perform and play as much first team cricket as I can and contribute when I do.”
