Van Jaarsveld leads Kent to victory in Worcester CB40

Kent Spitfires 291 for 7 beat Worcestershire Royals 205 for 10 (34.3 overs)

Kent Spitfires have beaten Worcestershire Royals by 86 runs at New Road.

Kent won the toss and elected to bat first. The Spitfires made an impressive start, with youngsters Sam Billings (26) and CB40 debutant, Daniel Bell-Drummond (42 from 30 balls) opening; the latter fresh from his stint with the England Under-19s squad in the one day series against South Africa.

But, it was undoubtedly, man of the match, Martin Van Jaarsveld’s inspirational 124 run stand which was the cornerstone of the Kent innings. Van Jaarsveld hit twelve fours and two sixes before he was caught by Moeen Ali off the bowling of Jack Shantry. Darren Stevens’ 37, and Sam Northeast’s 30 were the only other significant contributions to Kent’s innings as they closed on 291 for 7.

Worcestershire were able to make only 205 in reply. Moeen Ali gave Worcestershire hope, hitting 55 from 35 balls, but he fell to Simon Cook, who returned figures of 3 for 40. All the bowlers played a part, but David Balcombe finished the innings off and ended with 4 for 38.
