Kent Walking Cricketers represent the county at Lord’s

Kent Cricket Community Trust (KCCT) took 23 of its walking cricketers to compete at an inaugural inter-county Walking Cricket Festival at ‘the Home of Cricket’, Lord’s Cricket Ground on Wednesday 20 March 2024.

The day was a celebration of Walking Cricket with counties from all over the country turning out including: Durham, Worcester, Derby, Gloucester and MCC.

Walking Cricket continues to go from strength to strength, with KCCT now overseeing six Walking Cricket hubs across Ashford, Canterbury Folkestone, Thanet, Swale and Strood.

On the day, the games were very competitive and closely fought with Derby eventually being crowned the winners. All the teams played five games throughout the day, hosted in the excellent Indoor School at The Home of Cricket. The highlight of the day for the Kent team was drawing an excellent game against Gloucester.

Walking Cricket’s rules continue to be refined and there is now a specific format and set of guidance.

Aside from the privilege of being able to play at Lord’s, it was incredible to share in the passion of Walking Cricket with so many other cricket enthusiasts. Although facing some talented teams, there was a powerful sense of comradery both on and off the pitches, which appeals to the spirit of walking cricket being an inclusive and friendly sport.

KCCT’s Project Officer, Aimee Illidge, said: “A special thank you to the organizers of the day and Lord’s Cricket ground for hosting us and taking the teams on an exclusive tour of the grounds.

“It was a truly memorable experience that has ignited a deeper passion for the game in our participants.

“As a result, KCCT is determined to grow walking cricket in Kent further. As we look to establish more groups throughout the county, we will also be holding more mini-competitions between our various walking cricket groups in Kent. If you are interested in joining a group, please see the website for a session near you.

“Lastly, thank you to our coaches and captains for assisting on the day. Your dedication and input are invaluable.”
