Powering the Game: How Cricket Clubs Are Going Solar

Thursday 18th September 2025

If you’ve been thinking about ways to cut costs and make your club more sustainable, you’re not alone. In the video below, you’ll hear directly from committee members at Walmer, Sibton Park and Minster (Sheppey) who’ve already made the leap to solar.

For many clubs, energy bills are one of those unavoidable overheads that quietly eat into the budget. But with solar panels, that story starts to change. Some clubs have seen savings of up to 90% on their electricity costs, freeing up valuable funds each year that can go straight back into the things that matter.

And it’s not just about the money. With battery storage systems in place, clubs can store energy during the day and use it when it’s needed. One club even rerouted excess solar energy to heat their showers, much to the surprise of the first team who came out wondering what had changed. (Spoiler: it was the sun.)

There’s also the bigger picture. As community hubs, cricket clubs are in a great position to lead by example when it comes to sustainability. Making the switch to solar is a visible,

practical step toward being greener, and it’s something members and visitors alike will appreciate.

If your club is thinking about going solar, the video is packed with useful advice, from planning permission and electrical setup to fire safety and insurance. The takeaway? With a bit of prep and the right support, it’s more than doable—and well worth it.

Each of these projects were supported in part by the ECB County Grants Fund, which we anticipate to re-open in February 2026.
