KENT’S second team have the upper hand going into the final day of their Championship match with Essex at Beckenham. Batting first, Essex declared on 357-6 with two wickets apiece for Will Rudge and James Goodman.

James Hockley (pictured) then showed his class with a knock of 152 and he received good support from Azhar Mahmood (107) and Dan Stickels 61. Wicketkeeper Paul Dixey hit 40. It was good to see Azhar hit a ton ahead of Saturday’s big Twenty20 Cup Finals Day at Edgbaston.

Essex will resume their second innings on 37-1.
