The Kent Spitfires suffered a 110-run defeat in their opening Friends Provident Trophy tie of the season. Batting first, in a rain reduced match at Taunton, the Somerset Sabresscored 291 for three from their 38 overs with former Kent all-rounder Peter Trego top scoring with an unbeaten 73. Batting at five, Trego hit six fours and five sixes in a 36-ball 73. He shared an unbroken stand of 103 for the fourth wicket with Zander de Buryn who weighed in with 71 from 68 deliveries. Opener Marcus Trescothick scored 70 at the top of the innings. Spinner Rob Ferley was the pick of the Kent attack, with two wickets, while paceman Warren Lee took a wicket with his first ball in the Kent first-team.

Kent’s reply got off to a disappointing start as skipper Rob Key was dismissed early on but fellow opener Joe Denly stuck around to register 43 and received support from Martin van Jaarsveld (24) and James Hockley (26) but the asking rateproved too much – despite a cameo innings from the in-form Geraint Jones. The Kent and England wicketkeeper hit 43 from just 35 balls – including three fours and a six – but it was nowhere near enough as the home side ran out convincing winners.

Kent are back in action on Wednesday when they play Essex in the LVCounty Championship at Chelmsford.
