Northeast hits unbeaten half-century in Sunshine Coast win

Sam Northeast hit an unbeaten 80 to guide Sunshine Coast Scorchers to victory in the opening Queensland First Grade match of 2016.

The Kent captain struck eleven boundaries in three-and-a-half hours at the crease as he anchored the reply to clinch a three-wicket win.

In Sydney, Fabian Cowdrey took 2/47 as Western Suburbs dismissed Hawkesbury for 231.

In reply, Cowdrey hit three fours and a six as the 22-year-old reached 40 not out at the top of the order.

Wests closed on 67 for two with day two scheduled for next Saturday (23 January).

Mitch Claydon had his first bowl for a month as Newcastle Sabres beat Cardiff-Boolaroo in a T20 via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

He opened the bowling helping restricted Cardiff to 93 for seven chasing Newcastle’s 141 before a storm set in.
