2nd XI Trophy run ends in Duckworth-Lewis defeat

Kent’s second XI exited the Trophy at the semi-final stage as Lancashire won a close-fought contest by 11 runs.

Callum Jackson hit a half-century after rain delayed the start and interrupted the visitors’ innings to reduce the contest to 22 overs per side.

The Duckworth-Lewis method set the hosts a target of 176 to win after Lancashire scored 156 for five after three rain delays.

Kent’s seamers restricted the scoring before Adam Riley struck twice in two overs to remove experienced overs Karl Brown and Luis Reece.

Spin broke the deadlock again when Imran Qayyum trapped Brooke Guest LBW.

The last five overs proved the difference as Lancashire blasted 57 off five overs with Rob Jones scoring 27 off 19 balls and Danny Lamb’s 16 not out from five deliveries.

Sam Weller and Charlie Hartley took a wicket apiece.

In reply, former England one-day spinner Stephen Parry removed opener Zak Crawley after early fireworks from partner Callum Jackson, who struck six fours and three sixes in a 42-ball knock of 58.

Spin made the difference again as Matt Parkinson took pace off the ball and frustrated Kent batsmen with a superb spell of 4/17 off five overs to put Kent behind the required rate.

Charlie Hartley hit back-to-back sixes before being adjudged LBW for 17 off eight balls and Sam Weller struck a quick-fire 20 as Kent outscored their opponents but were 11 runs short of the computer-generated target.
