A poem to greet the new season

Kent’s resident poet Marco Jackson has penned a tribute to the start of the county cricket season ahead of Friday’s opening match against Gloucestershire.

The Days

These are the days we’ve awaited all year,

When the Wisden comes out and the previews appear,

These are the days that we come more with hope,

Of seeing some action past the boundary rope.

These are the days we watch the sky,

Remembering, worriedly, rains gone by.

These are the days of the summer unwritten,

Of blank white pages to be filled by the smitten.

These are the days to which greatness is summoned,

Be it Denly or Stevens, or Daniel Bell-Drummond.

These are the days of both new and old faces,

Of shuffling the order and of battling for places.

These are the days now the season’s rolled ‘round,

That all eyes will fall on the The Spitfire Ground.

These are the days that are here at long last,

With our dreams for the future, our thoughts of the past,

These are the days, that our forefathers meant,

‘Cause we’re here for the cricket, and we’re here to see Kent.
