Countystyle Recycling helps to keep London’s largest food market operating during the Coronavirus crisis

Countrystyle Recycling has been working flat out to keep London’s largest Wholesale Food Market, New Spitalfields Market at Leyton, East London clean so that it can continue to supply fruit and vegetables to London and the East & South East of the UK during the Coronavirus crisis.

New Spitalfields Market has over 120 tenants operating from units at the Market’s 32 acre site, and although some have seen their business dramatically affected by the lockdown of restaurants, pubs and hotels, the Market remains very busy receiving and selling on, fruit, vegetables and flowers from across the UK and Europe, to independent retail operators that supply food to large parts of the population of London.

Jan Hutchinson, Chief Executive of the Spitalfields Market Tenants Association, has said:

“As one of the key supply routes for fruit, vegetables and flowers into the non-supermarket customer-facing food outlets across the South East of England, we bear a huge responsibility at any time, but never more so than now. Despite the lockdown situation in some European countries, our supplies have not stopped – we still have an abundance of product in the market and we are doing everything we can to enable our customers to continue trading as close to normally as can be”.

Countrystyle has held the contract for the integrated cleaning and recycling services at New Spitalfields Market (awarded by The City of London Corporation) for 10 years now and is now more than ever an integral part of keeping the Market operating in unprecedented times.

Doug Howard, Countrystyle’s Market Operations Manager, who manages over 30 staff at the Market said “The Countrystyle Team here at Spitalfields have dug in deep and worked hard during this crisis to ensure that when the Market opens at midnight each day they keep on top of the rubbish and when it closes at 09.00 the following morning, we return it spotless for the next trading session by 14.00”.
