England Women beat New Zealand to take third place in the ICC Women’s World Cup and Edwards sets another record.

England Women ended their 2013 World Cup campaign on a high with a four wicket victory over New Zealand to claim third place at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai today.

Kent captain, Charlotte Edwards led the side to victory scoring her eighth international century, equalling the record for the most centuries and becoming the first woman to score over 5000 runs in a career.

England won the toss and inserted New Zealand, restricting them to 220-8 from their 50 overs. Holly Colvin emerged as pick of the bowlers, taking three for 31 from her 10 overs and claiming the scalp of the White Ferns’ main contributor Amy Satterthwaite who posted 85.

Jenny Gunn gave away just 20 runs from her eight overs and claimed England’s first scalp, having Susie Bates caught by Lydia Greenway in the 12^th over. Alongside Colvin, who dismissed Rachael Priest and Satterthwaite in consecutive balls, further wickets were shared between Danielle Hazell and Arran Brindle as New Zealand were restricted to 220.

Edwards led the chase finding the boundary on 15 occasions in her unbeaten 106-run innings. The England captain anchored her side sharing a 78-run partnership with Sarah Taylor and despite losing wickets in the later overs England cruised to victory with 19 balls to spare to finish on 222-6.

Charlotte Edwards said: “Today was all about getting over the line. It’s all about contributing to the team and today was about us getting third place and ending this tournament on a high.

“The bowling and fielding all round was pleasing and I was very happy to restrict them to 220. Jenny bowled well upfront today and Holly through the middle.

“Personally I’m happy with my performance but it’s all about the team for me. It’s always great to get a hundred, but today was about the team getting over the line and getting the runs.

“I’ve really enjoyed the tournament, to see some of the cricket that has been played by all the teams has been fantastic. Looking back on the tournament at losing two games is going to hurt for a while but I’m really proud of the England team, how they’ve stuck to the task. There have been some real highs and lows throughout the tournament but we’ll go back, work hard and come back stronger. We’ve got a big Ashes series in the summer and we’re all really looking forward to playing Australia.”
