Kent Cricket joins forces with KRNM for the Legends’ Walkway

Friday 14th January 2011

Kent County Cricket Club has teamed up with Kent Regional News & Media to help the Club find the 12 players that will be honoured in a new Legends“ Walkway at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.

To mark the historic redevelopment the Club is developing a new walkway, which will form the central entranceway in the bottom tier of the new three tiered public square.

The walkway will be divided into 12 distinct sections, each linked to one of the greats of Kent Cricket. The selection of the greatest ever 12 players will be a joint decision between members/supporters and a selection committee, chaired by Honorary Curator David Robertson. The committee will also include Honorary Statistician Howard Milton, KRNM Sports Editor Tony Rickson and Derek Carlaw, a lifelong Kent supporter, with others to potentially be added. Initially, 40 names will be nominated in April and May. These will then be whittled down, with people getting the opportunity to vote for the winning 12.

The Club is pleased to be working with KRNM on this project. During April and May they will publish extensive details on the 40 players in their countywide newspapers. This will help members and supporters to vote for the players they feel have given loyal and unstinting service. Information will also be carried on the Kent Cricket website and the voting procedure for the final 12 will be released.

Commenting on the partnership with Kent Regional News & Media (publishers of the Medway News, East Kent Gazette, Canterbury Times Series, Thanet Times, Isle of Thanet Gazette, Dover Express and Folkestone Herald Series), the Club“s Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Clifford, said: “It is great news that KRNM will profile the outstanding contribution that these players have made to Kent County Cricket Club. We have a proud history and this partnership will allow everyone to learn even more about Kent“s great cricketers – both past and present.”

KRNM Sports Editor Tony Rickson added: "We are delighted to be involved and look forward to the whole project. It’s going to be difficult enough getting the list down to just 40 names – and our readers will find it even harder to come up with the final 12."

Members and supporters can be a part of the new Legends“ Walkway by purchasing a brick. As part of the promotion, a portion of the income from the funds generated will go to Demelza, the Club“s official charity.
