Kent draw with Surrey in pre-season friendly

Kent’s chilly pre-season friendly at the St Lawrence Ground ended as a draw, with Surrey finishing the second day on 327 for 3.

Kent had declared overnight on 318 for eight from 93.5 overs, with Brendan Nash having made a fluent 75. Geraint Jones contributed 56, with Ben Harmison (47) and Mike Powell (41) also making significant contributions. Jason Roy and Tim Linley took two wickets apiece, whilst Steven Davies took four catches for Surrey.

The second day began with a light snow at the St Lawrence Ground, and saw the Kent squad fielding in hats and gloves in the freezing temperatures.

Surrey’s Rory Burns and Roy were in good form, making 79 and 56 respectively, before Matt Coles trapped Roy LBW to leave Surrey 89for 1. Arun Harinath joined Burns and got off the mark with a square cut to the cover point boundary as Surrey went to lunch with the scoreboard reading 109 for 1 with Burns on 41. After the interval Burns moved to his fifty with a drive to the cover boundary off Calum Haggett.

Burns was on 79 when he used his feet to James Tredwell and lofted him straight to Daniel Bell-Drummond at deep midwicket to leave Surrey 174for 2. The dismissal of Burns brought Vikram Solanki to the crease, but after getting off the mark with a single into the legside he was bowled by Tredwell to leave Surrey 181 for 3.

Steven Davies joined Harinath, and struck Ben Harmison for consecutive boundaries. Harinath moved to fifty just before tea as Surrey went to the interval on 216 for 3.

After tea Davies raced to fifty off just 38 deliveries and he struck seven boundaries. The partnership raced past a hundred as Harinath opened his shoulders and lofted Haggett over the legside for six. Davies brought up a hundred from just 68 deliveries when he smashed Daniel Bell-Drummond to the mid wicket boundary.

When Surrey reached 327for 3 they declared meaning the game ended as a draw. Davies finished 103 and Harinath was unbeaten on 79, on a cold and challenging day for the Kent fielders.
